Fergie and the global gravy train

Rhoda has many international clients in her niche catering business – courtesy of the wealthy family she once married into – but she is by no means a globe-trotter, or dependent upon any sort of global gravy train in her business, and is aghast at the naïve attempts of Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, to jump onto the same gravy train that apparently her ex-husband, Prince Andrew, is riding as the United Kingdom's Special Representative for International Trade and Investment (a government job, part of the Dept of Trade & Industry).

“Fergie has frittered away most of the money she earned at Weightwatchers and other sources and claims to be living off her children’s trust funds,” explains Rhoda. “Desperate to maintain her lavish lifestyle, she naively thought that easy money could be made by trading on the Prince’s name to play a part in global business dealings.”

“I am not entirely sure that Prince Andrew was an innocent victim of Fergie’s bungled attempt to gain to £500,000 from a businessman in return for an introduction to her well-connected ex husband,” says Rhoda, “but that someone would pay for such an introduction calls into question exactly what the prince’s role is in world business and why he is spending so much time in Kazakhstan.”

“Apparently, Prince Andrew sold the couple’s old Sunninghill Park home to a wealthy Kazakhstani for a sum millions over what it was worth, and there’s a luxury home in Abu Dhabi that may have been given to him, too,” confides Rhoda. “With this sort of gravy train – part of, or incidental to, his public role as a trade ambassador – Fergie was eager to get aboard as well.”

“Royal wives unwisely using their status as leverage in global dealings is nothing new – the Countess of Wessex, Sophie Rhys-Jones, once used her royal connections to further the interests of her public relations business in Dubai,” says Rhoda, “but, like Fergie, she came unstuck by naively dealing with unscrupulous characters, dragging the Royal Family into disrepute.”

“It’s amazing that Fergie thought she could do better than Sophie and outwit the fake sheik Mazher Mahmood,” sighs Rhoda. “She is a total loose cannon without any class whatsoever and as such has no chance whatsoever of successfully boarding the global gravy train that enriches her ex-husband and others like him.”
